The Rev. Kira B. Skala // Artist // VP 2 ShenArts Board of Directors // BS in Dance Shenandoah University // MDiv. Virginia Theological Seminary
What does ShenArts mean to you?
Having been ” birthed” from the “Emerging Artist Program, ” led by the very talented ShenArts staff member, Christy Broy, my voyage into the realm of visual arts has grown and expanded. ShenArts provided me the much needed education, skills, support and pportunity to create and share with our community, my first watercolor solo show ” Natural Muses” in May 2019. Whether it is walking in downtown Winchester enjoying the art displayed in the “Artscape” banners, viewing an “Art in the Halls” exhibit at the MSV or volunteering at “The Muse Art Fair” to paint with children at the ShenArts booth, I believe this organization is providingour community vital connections and opportunities for exhibits, education, collaboration and support for artists of many differing genres.
Why are you passionate about serving this community?
As a retired priest, a former ballet dancer, actress and former choreographer for the Virginia Youth Ballet, a quilter, costume designer, liturgical fiber artist, and current watercolorist, creativity, working with people, and serving the community is part of every cell in my entire body. To serve on the Board of ShenArts as 2nd Vice President has given me the opportunity to use my leadership skills, organizational training and ability to collaborate with board members, staff and members of our community. My passion for serving our community is based on the belief that art is for everyone, art helps in healing, art can and does serve all of humanity.
